Bordering Sha Tin in the South Western end of the Sha Tin Valley is the historic village of Tai Wai (大圍), which is home to one of the largest walled village in Hong Kong that was built during the Ming Dynasty in 1574. Today, Tai Wai has managed to retain its neighbourhood feel, with equal measures of small family owned and operated stores as well as a few small trendy eateries. In the early days, Tai Wai was an industrial district, but it now features a mix of public and private housing estates and apartment blocks, as well as more luxurious housing for those who can afford it. For anyone looking to rent or buy in the area, Tai Wai offers the Home Ownership Scheme (HOS), Tenants Purchase Scheme (TPS) and a Private Sector Participation Scheme (PSPS). Tai Wai also has many 3 storied village houses, some of which are more Western-styled while others are more traditionally styled. Notable places of interest include the Hong Kong Heritage Museum located right next to the Shing Mun River - the museum features 12 exhibition halls showcasing Hong Kong’s culture through displays of art, music, dance, history, literature and theatre. Tai Wai has good transport links too, with the MTR station serving two lines; the East Rail line and the Ma On Shan Line.
