Yau Ma Tei (油麻地) is a sub-district of Yau Tsim Mong district in the Southern Kowloon Peninsula, nestled between Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. The area was once situated where the waterfront is now before massive land reclamation took place to accommodate transport infrastructure. Something that sets Yau Ma Tei apart is the way it has escaped gentrification and redevelopment in the past and it is often described as a more traditional area. Yau Ma Tei's Temple Street is a popular tourist hotspot and one of the most famous open-air markets in Hong Kong for buying cheap clothes and souvenirs. The temple street market has also been featured in numerous movies. Yau Ma Tei buzzes with energy throughout the day and by night, it transforms into a hive of hawkers and fruit markets, vibrant street performers and prostitutes. Other notable places of interest include the Yau Ma Tei Theater, the Gwo Laan fruit market and the Jade Market.
