In between Sai Wan Ho and Heng Fa Chuen is Shau Kei Wan (筲箕灣) - a small residential neighbourhood in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island. It is also an old fishing village which was once used as a typhoon shelter for local fishermen until it developed into a shipbuilding town and nowadays it is a densely populated residential area. Shau Kei Wan was previously known by the Chinese people as ‘the bay of starving people’. However, you wouldn't think that today - a brief stroll around the area reveals a place that seems centered around food with a delightful fusion of culinary treats and culture. It also has some affordable entry-level properties for first home buyers too, who are looking to stay on the Island. The Housing Society and the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) recently implemented seven new residential housing developments and there are some good schools and a hospital in the vicinity. Other notable places of interest in Shau Kei Wan include the colourful Kam Wa (outdoor) Street market, Shing Wong Temple, Tin Hau and Yuk Wong Temples, Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence, the Shau Kei Wan Wholesale Fish Market and the Island East Sports Centre (港島東體育館).
